Chapter 7

After the disastrous meeting with Mr. Chesley, Thaddeus suggested the next meeting take place in the hotel lobby. That way if Zara enjoyed the man’s company, she could suggest they move to the dining room and have lunch, and if not, she could easily escape.

But as he waited on the boardwalk outside the hotel to give Zara and Mr. Norton privacy, he was conflicted. Their introduction had gone smoothly, and Zara had seemed interested in the man.

Thaddeus had never taken the time to contemplate another man’s appearance and debate whether or not a woman would find them handsome, but he had a feeling Mr. Norton would please Zara both in looks and temperament. He’d spoken briefly with him and found him to be kind and considerate. He was also extremely wealthy, which was a necessity in Thaddeus’ mind. Even if it was a lower priority for Zara, he wouldn’t allow her to suffer in that way. As far as Thaddeus could see, they would be a good match.

He frowned. Why then didn’t he feel more pleased about it? This was exactly what he needed to do to make amends. He’d harmed Zara, regardless of his intention, and this was his restitution. He’d found someone who could take care of her and would make her happy.

It didn’t matter if he was happy. Thaddeus didn’t deserve to be happy in this scenario.

He kicked a pebble resting on a board by his foot. He needed to be happy for her and whoever she ended up marrying. Because that man wouldn’t be him. No matter how much he’d come to care for her, no matter how much he longed for her to be his, it wasn’t meant to be.

He had nothing to offer her. Not really. He barely had enough money to keep up his modest luxuries. There wasn’t enough to buy her a proper wardrobe, let alone a home. Plus, he’d deceived her.

He wasn’t worthy of her. Mr. Norton would be a good match for her, and Thaddeus would move on with his life. In a few more minutes he’d peer into the foyer to confirm they’d moved to the dining room. After that, he could grab a quick bite to eat. There was a new bakery that had just opened, and he knew he could quickly get a sandwich there.

But before he got the chance, the hotel door swung open and Zara stomped out.

“Zara, what’s wrong? Where’s Mr. Norton?” He glanced past her shoulder to see if the man was following her. Perhaps they wanted to eat elsewhere?

Her hands went to her hips, and she blew a tendril of hair from her face. “Did you even ask these men any screening questions before sending them to me?”

Thaddeus paused, thinking over what could have possibly gone wrong. “I spoke with him,” he said slowly. “He’s kind, wants a wife, and genuinely seemed to care for and appreciate women.”

She tapped her foot. “Did you, by chance, ask Mr. Norton if he had a problem with his wife working?”

“No.
